Panelist at BiYou II hosted by Los Angeles LGBT Center and amBi Los Angeles (RJ Aguiar, Brandon Burciaga, Jasmine Flores, Alyssa Bolter, Ross Victory)

What an unforgettable evening at the annual BiYOU event for Bisexual Pride Day on September 23rd!

The panel featured insightful conversation from Bicons Alyssa Bolter, R.J. Aguiar, Ross Victory, and Jasmine Flores. Moderated by Brandon Burciaga! The after party included music from MARQUE and dance from Jasmine Flores.

The night was filled with education, laughter, and vulnerable moments as we explored important topics, such as the 1995 Newsweek cover and its 30-year impact on the bisexual community.

As a panelist, one key takeaway was the power of community — I felt lighter, as though I added 10 years to my life, with the ease and comfort of having nothing to hide in this space. Notably, that this space existed in my hometown, was accessible, and thoughtfully produced.

Reflecting on how bisexuality is still often misunderstood, we discussed the ongoing narrative that bisexuality is either trendy or a salacious headline. It was powerful to challenge these ideas head-on. We also talked about why people make our bisexuality about them and also if different genders activate different parts of ourselves.

The inclusion of Bi+ people in the Los Angeles LGBT Hollywood Center’s strategic plan was a significant highlight, with plans to add BiYou to it’s regular rotation of events. This visibility signals that bisexual people are not only real but also deserving of support and community AND thoughtfully, well-produced events.

Years ago, I would have never felt comfortable stepping into an LGBTQ center due to internalized shame and fear of how I would be received. Ironically, I needed the support but projected my own ideas about the center and what it meant for me to be there.

But now, knowing we are welcomed and that there is programming for us changes everything. And this is what we need. Dedicated, intentional programming that showcases a variety of perspectives, points of view, and personalities.

It was an incredible night of connection, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. Thank you to the passionate organizers, Chris Clarkin, Stefanie Cifuentes, Brandon Burciaga, all the folks in the background, leadership, and everyone who made this event possible! Imagine how far we can go!
